Description

This is a black and white photo, dated 1965, of the English actor James Mason sitting at a table with others, three of whom are identified at the back of the photo as festival director Dermot Breen, Donal Crosbie, and the manager of the Oyster Tavern, Jimmy Martin.  Mason, with grey flecked hair and wearing a tweed jacket, rests his right hand on the table holding an empty wine glass. The convivial group might be seated at a table in the Oyster Tavern on Market Lane in Cork.

James Mason (1909-1984) appears a couple of times in the archive. Around the time of this picture, Mason was making the war film The Blue Max (John Guillermin, 1966) which was shot at Ardmore Studios and filmed in various locations around Ireland. The film was about a German fighter pilot on the Western Front during World War I. Some of the scenes were shot at the Carrickabrack Viaduct in Fermoy, Co. Cork where George Peppard as Leutnant Stachel and James Mason, as Generalleutnant Von Klugermann, flew several times under the spectacular railway bridge which spans the River Blackwater.
