Description

This is a black and white photo of the festival director Dermot Breen escorting an unidentified actor at the steps of the Savoy Cinema in Cork. Both are dressed in formal evening wear, Breen in a dark suit and the lady in a three-quarter length dress accessorised with a fur stole and white gloves. She is carrying a bouquet of flowers in her left hand and is looking directly at the camera. An usher escorts them while all around a crowd jostles to view the passing entourage. Some of the images of the crowd are blurred but we can sense the hustle and bustle of the event.

Above the passing cinema-goers, we can read posters advertising two personal appearances that evening: Personal appearance: Lea Massari and Tonight at 8pm: Fiorella Mari. Both Massari and Mari were Italian actors and from this, we might guess that this fair-haired woman in this picture is Forella Mari. Born in Brazil, Mari moved to Rome in the 1950s and is best known for her roles in Are We Men or Corporals? (Camillo Mastrocinque, 1955) and Fathers and Sons (Padri e figli) (1957) by Mario Monicelli, which was shown at the Cork Film Festival that year.
