Description

This is a black and white photograph of the actor James Mason arriving at the Savoy Cinema accompanied by a small entourage that includes Jimmy Campbell, festival director Dermot Breen, and others. Wearing evening suits accessorised with a festival ribbon they smile as they approach the entrance of the cinema - their faces lit by the flash of the press camera. A large crowd, held back by two uniformed guards, jostle for a glimpse of the stars.

James Mason (1909-1984) was an English actor who found success in England and Hollywood from the 1950s through to the 1980s starring in more than 100 films. Around the time of this picture, Mason was making the war film The Blue Max (John Guillermin, 1966) which was shot at Ardmore Studios and filmed in various locations around Ireland.  Some of the aerial warfare scenes were shot at the Carrickabrack Viaduct in Fermoy, Co. Cork where James Mason, as General von Klugermann, flew several times under the spectacular railway bridge which spans the River Blackwater.
