Description

This is a black and white photo of the Lord Mayor of Cork, Seán O'Leary, making a speech at an unidentified location. O'Leary stands at the microphone, notes in hand, and looks out to an unseen audience. Behind him we note the crystal decanter of whiskey which would often accompany a festival award presentation in the early days.

The Fine Gael politician Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, and judge who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972-1973. He studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. In a career that was distinguished and varied, he noted that holding the Mayoralty of Cork was one of the greatest honours of his life. He died in 2006, age 65.
