Description
This is a black and white photo taken in 1956 of the Czech-born German film actor Winnie Markus in conversation with the Irish politician Jack Lynch and others identified at the back of the photo as Gus Healy, John A Walsh, Frank Acker, TJ O'Driscoll, and Jo Casey. Jack Lynch, a Fianna Fail politician who would serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979, is smiling at Markus who is gesturing as she speaks. The group also includes Augustine (Gus) Healy, a Fianna Fail politician, who served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. He is standing on the lower right of Markus who is dressed in a light-coloured fur-trimmed evening gown.
Winnie Markus was born in 1921 and moved to Germany, via Prague and Vienna, when she was sixteen. She started her acting career on the stage before her first film role in 1939 with A Mother's Love (Gustav Ucicky, 1939). Markus would follow this with leading roles in films of all genres from the war through to the post-war period. In 1959 she retired from film and would only appear in television and theatre appearances until her death in 2002 from pneumonia. She was awarded the prestigious German culture award - the Gold Film Tape - for her contribution to German film in 1986.
