Description

This is a black and white photo of the German-born English actor Peter Gilmore on stage with an unidentified companion. Gilmore, in a long-line velvet jacket, and his colleague, in a white frill-trimmed dress, are holding microphones and appear to be singing.

Peter Gilmore (1931-2013) is best known for his role as James Onedin in the long-running BBC series The Onedin Line which ran from 1971 to 1980. The Onedin Line was based in late 19th-century Liverpool and told the story of the rise of a shipping company and the trials and tribulations that beset the Onedin family along the way. His filmography includes 11 appearances in the Carry On film franchise including its final release Carry On Columbus (Gerald Thomas) in 1992. Gilmore had a brief singing career and also worked on stage musicals which might back up his singing performance in this photo. (Stuart Jeffries, 'Peter Gilmore obituary,' The Guardian, 06.02.2013.)
