Description

This is a black and white photo of the Lord Mayor Pat Kerrigan making a presentation to the composer Bernard Geary in the company of festival Chairman Donal Lehane, festival director Dermot Breen, and the tenor Kevin Owens. The Lord Mayor, wearing the chain of office, is turned towards Geary, in a three-piece tweed suit, holding what seems to be a programme or image for the festival-commissioned Mass of Saint Finbarr. The 1973 film festival programme notes that Geary composed and conducted the Mass of Saint Finbarr that year. The mass was first performed at the Church of St. Francis, in Cork, with Kevin Owens as a soloist and the Cork Film International Children’s Choir.

Owens, standing in the middle of this photo looking towards the Mayor, was a well-known radio performer with radio programmes including Melody from Munster, Songs of the Night, and Music of the Nation. He worked with Bernard Geary and gained success with his solo performance in Geary’s Mass of Saint Finbarr on the Aisling record label.
