Description

This black and white photo shows a group of men standing together posing for the camera. We recognise the filmmaker John Boorman standing at the far left in a cheque jacket. He stands alongside the Irish director Norman Cohen, in a dark jacket and short beard. Cohen was a familiar presence at the festival in the seventies, along with Lynda Bellingham and Linda Hayden who starred in his risqué comedies including Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Cohen, 1977) and Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (Cohen, 1977).

The 1974 film festival programme notes that Boorman and Cohen were both members of the International Jury for the Feature Films Competition that year which helps us date this photo. Sheamus Smith, wearing his distinctive glasses, stands on the far right of the photo. Smith was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). He published his memoir Off Screen (Gill and MacMillan) in 2007.
