1984 Cork Festival of Film programme content

Subject

Cork Film Festival, Festival of Film, Robert Flaherty, Shane Briant, Cork 800

Description

The original 1984 programme is a soft card-bound issue measuring 9.5cm x 21cm. The bind is stapled and it has 64 numbered pages.

We note the title: Cork Festival of Film which was introduced at the 1982 festival to reflect the limited programming due to financial difficulties. Film listings include Pigs (Thaddeus O’Sullivan, 1984); Looking for Dev (Gerry Sandford and Stephen Ryan, 1984); Samuel Beckett – Silence to Silence (Sean O Mordha, 1984); and Man of Aran (Robert J Flaherty, 1934). Since 1984 was the centenary of the birth of Robert Flaherty and the fiftieth anniversary of the first screening of Man of Aran, a lecture was given that year in his honour (p.15). We note the Australian film Constance (Bruce Morrison, 1984) starring Shane Briant. Briant was a visitor to the festival in the early seventies and some of his images can be found in the archive. A short article about the forthcoming Cork 800 celebrations can be found at the back of the programme.
