Description
This is a black and white photo of the American theatre and film director, Otto Preminger being presented an award by the Fianna Fáil politician Jack Lynch (1917-1999). They are both wearing dark suits with a bow-tie, and Preminger is shown, on the left, in profile accepting the award from Lynch who is smiling at him. Jack Lynch would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. At the time of this picture (marked as 1957) he served as Minister for Education and Minister for Gaeltacht Affairs. He is also played Gaelic sports for Cork and is regarded as one of the greatest dual players of all-time.
Otto Preminger (1905-1986) was born in Austria-Hungary but fled to Austria with his family after the breakout of the first World War. He went on to work for Fox Studios in Los Angeles and was known for defying the censorship code of Hollywood with his controversial films. He directed more than 35 feature films including the Oscar-nominated The Moon is Blue (1953) with the English actor Dawn Addams who was a frequent visitor to the Cork Film Festival during the 1950s.
In this picture, Preminger is being presented with a silver-plated single-column trophy engraved with the Cork coat of arms on the front. While we cannot see the detail in this picture, we know from another image in the archive that the award is topped with a film reel and that a film ribbon motif is replicated at various levels of the column.
